Japanese artist Itō Jakuchū Itō was the eldest son of a Kyoto greengrocer who left the family business around age 40 to pursue painting and Zen study. Not widely celebrated in his own time, he quietly developed a practice of studying vegetables in the market, observing birds in gardens, and experimenting with pigments and silk to capture both form and spirit.

His Golden Pheasant in the Snow shows a brilliant bird against a serene winter landscape, rendered with layered color, delicate texture, and striking detail. This vintage Japanese bird print and Edo-period wall art embodies Jakuchū’s commitment to elevating overlooked beauty and blending careful observation with imaginative, spiritual artistry.
